Electrophysiology Nurse

The Interventional and Invasive Procedures nurse executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to managing complex systems. They may circulate, monitor, and operate equipment on the most complex examination and treatment procedures including intra-aortic balloon pump therapy for critical ill patients. They assure medications are properly labeled and available for physician administration. They have a functional knowledge of the procedure specific medications use, appropriate doses, and side effects. They assist with training and mentoring other nurses, technicians, nursing students, and fellows. They assist the Nurse Manager with quality control and performance improvement activities. They work with physician to complete both diagnostic and interventional invasive procedures including:
LHC, RHC, PTCAs, stent placement, IABP, IVUS, pressure wires, pericardiocentesis, temporary pacemakers, radial artery procedures, peripheral procedures, permanent pacemaker placement and AICD placement, implanted port placement, PICC line placement, various biopsies, and peripheral vascular diagnostic and interventional studies. The Interventional and Invasive Procedures nurse demonstrates proficiency and competence in all areas of interventional and invasive procedures within Interventional Radiology, Cardiology, and Electrophysiology. The Interventional and Invasive Procedures nurse monitors the progression of procedures requiring independent judgment and anticipates need to provide specific instruments, supplies and/or catheters. The Interventional and Invasive Procedures nurse has intimate knowledge of vascular and coronary anatomy and physiology related to cardiovascular and systemic disease processes and will be responsible for cross-training in non-invasive areas. Routine Duties may include but not limited to:
Set-up, calibrate, perform quality assurance, and operate complex technical equipment used during invasive interventional and invasive procedures. These are to include but not limited to defibrillators, monitors/recorders, and angiographic systems. Sets up computers in order to acquire, reconstruct and analyze data using various computer software and peripheral devices to quantify coronary and vascular lesions and to generate ventricular analysis reports, cardiac output, gradients, valve areas and other diagnostic parameters for patient reports. Operates complex highly technical x-ray, recording, monitoring, data querying, and therapeutic equipment for invasive and non-invasive procedural areas. Records all procedural data accurately using the Philips radiographic and hemodynamic monitoring system, EP systems recording, PACS imaging, and additional equipment in non-invasive areas. Recognizes potential life threatening situations and deals effectively with same. This would include recognizing any complications, potential or real, and relating this information to the physician before, during, or post procedure. Selects the required instruments, supplies, catheters, guide wires, stents, and necessary equipment for the prescribed procedure. This includes preparing highly technical equipment such as arterial and vascular balloon catheters, directional atherectomy balloon catheters, valvuloplasty balloon catheters for use during the diagnostic and interventional procedures. Sets up and assists in ultra-sound guided procedures and pathology specimen handling. Maintains radiation safety at all times for patient as well as for staff. Anticipates patient safety needs and meets them at all times. Confirms patient's understanding of proposed procedure; reviews patient record for proper consent documentation and lab results; reports abnormal results; and collaborates with other team members to assure patient is properly prepared for the procedure. Actively participates in Quality Assurance / Improvement processes Actively participates in staff in-service training and maintains/updates own knowledge of all diagnostic and interventional equipment, educational process of cardiac residents, cardiac fellows, and other educational affiliations of the William (Bill) Heffner VA. The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles.
