The Primary Care Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner will provide outpatient primary care treatment to Veterans with acute and chronic illness, with emphasis on preventive medicine. Evaluation and assessment of patients, followed by evidence based treatment of patient's health care needs, in a Veteran centric, team-based model of care delivery. Routine coordination and collaboration with specialty care, mental health, and other team members, is considered an essential component of this position in order to ensure optimum patient health and delivery of efficient care.Duties include, but are not limited to:
Performing initial medical histories and physical examinations on new and established patients. Functioning as an expert in primary care clinical practice and/or in areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities; Systematically evaluating current practice, and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within area of expertise; Provide direct, episodic and comprehensive primary care to Veterans on an outpatient basis (defined panel of patients), in the primary care setting, to adults (includes chronic diseases encompassing all medical specialties). Refer patients appropriately to and coordinate care with subspecialties, maintaining continuity of care with the veteran. Provides coverage of walk-in patients in the of primary care setting, including assessment and treatment of acute and chronic illness. Take histories, perform physical examinations, test interpretations, selected minor diagnostic procedures, patient counseling, differential diagnoses, and medical therapeutics. Must be able to assist with other duties as assigned. The Veteran population we serve is mostly male with common medical problems:
diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, COPD, mental health disorders (anxiety and depression), etc. The VA is caring for an increased number of women veterans. Candidates with experience in women's health (annual gyn exams, contraception counseling, treatment of common gyn acute and chronic illness) and with interest in caring for both female and male veterans are encouraged to apply Work Schedule:

Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. (The certification MUST be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected); or A Physician Assistant must (1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and (2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. A Nurse Practitioner must be a graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) Nurse Practitioner must have a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Physician Assistant must have (1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA. Reference:
