Physician Assistant - Cardiology

The Electrophysiology Physician Assistant (EP PA) collaborates with the interdisciplinary health team to ensure continuity of care and to maximize the patient's response to treatment. The EP PA is a health care professional that, through the utilization of specialized knowledge and skills, under the direction of a qualified physician, performs assessments and procedures on patients resulting in accurate diagnosis and treatment of congenital or acquired heart disease while maintaining maximum patient safety and comfort. The EP PA performs/reviews a baseline patient assessment, evaluates patient response to diagnostic or interventional maneuvers and provides patient care and pharmacologic management commonly used in treating cardiac arrhythmias.They assist with training and mentoring other nurses, technicians, nursing students, and cardiology fellows. They work with Physicians to coordinate both diagnostic and interventional invasive cardiac procedures including:
EP Studies, EP Ablations, implantable cardiac device procedures, arrhythmia clinic management and advanced device interrogations. Routine Duties may include but not limited to:
The EP PA will demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge in all areas of EP and arrhythmia management as described below:
Cardiac anatomy and physiology Mechanisms of arrhythmias Bradyarrhythmias Tachyarrhythmias Pharmacotherapy Additionally, the EP PA will have direct oversight of the arrhythmia management clinic and the device clinic. Independent assessment and management of arrhythmia care will be required. Advanced knowledge of interventional electrophysiology procedures is required and necessary for the evaluation and coordination of patient care. Independent ability to manage device interrogations is essential as the incumbent will serve in a supportive role to the device clinic personnel. Excellent customer service skills are required and essential when interacting with patients and family members as well as when collaborating with team members and other disciplines. Work Schedule:

The candidate must meet the following:
(1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and(2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Certification:
(1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.(2) Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by VA on a temporary basis (38 U.S.C. 7405), for a period not to exceed two years.(3) If a PA's NCCPA certification is suspended, revoked or expires, the PA must be removed from the occupation which may result in termination of employment.
